George Awuni, a regular panelist on Love Affairs, a relationship talk show on A1 Radio, has stirred controversy after advising young men to take charge in their romantic relationships and avoid allowing their female partners to dictate terms.
Mr. Awuni made the remark — “Don’t let a lady lead when you are in a relationship with her” — during a studio discussion on the topic “Dos and Don’ts in Building a Lasting Relationship.” His comments immediately triggered mixed reactions from listeners, social media users, and fellow panel members.
According to Mr. Awuni, allowing a woman to dominate decision-making can weaken respect, create imbalance, and eventually undermine harmony in a relationship. He argued that leadership, particularly in African cultural settings, plays a critical role in providing direction, stability, and accountability.
“When a man fails to provide direction in a relationship, confusion sets in. Decisions become emotional rather than strategic, and respect gradually fades. A relationship needs clear leadership to survive pressure and external influences,” he stated on air.
He clarified that his position was not intended to belittle women or undermine their intelligence and capabilities, but rather to emphasize structure and responsibility within romantic partnerships.
“This does not mean a woman should not contribute ideas or opinions. A wise man listens to his partner, but the final responsibility must rest on him. Leadership comes with sacrifice, protection, and accountability,” Mr. Awuni added.
He further advised men not to overexert themselves to impress their partners: “Don’t overdo things. Do what you can—it’s just a relationship. Do what you can and leave the rest to God. If she demands more than you can give, be plain and frank about it.”
The programme’s host acknowledged the diversity of opinions, noting that societal values continue to evolve, especially among the youth, where partnership models are increasingly replacing traditional hierarchies.
Love Affairs remains one of the most listened-to relationship talk shows in the Upper East Region, providing a platform for open dialogue on love, marriage, and emotional well-being.
Mr. Awuni’s remarks have since gained traction on local social media platforms, fueling ongoing discussions about whether leadership in relationships should follow tradition or modern partnership ideals.
As opinions remain sharply divided, one reality stands out: building a lasting relationship requires clarity of roles, mutual respect, effective communication, and shared commitment.
