The Assembly Member for the Kalbeo Electoral Area, Sonny Ayariga, organized a health walk and health screening exercise in the community on Saturday, January 24, as part of activities leading up to the annual Tinmaalgo Festival celebration.
The event, supported by the youth and elders of the community, aimed to promote health awareness and fitness among residents. Over 100 residents benefited from the screening, which included Hepatitis B screening and vaccination, as well as blood sugar and blood pressure checks.
Speaking to A1 News during the exercise, Mr. Ayariga emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, saying, “A healthy society develops without issues.” The event also served as a sensitization drive for the upcoming festival, scheduled for February 7, 2026.
The Assembly Member, who is also a health professional, encouraged residents to prioritize their health, highlighting the risks of hypertension and Hepatitis B. “One of the reasons is to sensitize our people on the need to check their blood pressure regularly because BP is known as a silent killer,” he said.
The health screening was conducted by health professionals at the Kalbeo Old Clinic. Those who tested negative received vaccinations, while those who tested positive for Hepatitis B were referred for further treatment and advised on lifestyle changes.
Mr. Ayariga is also urging the youth to unite and revive the Tinmaalgo Festival to its former glory. The festival was suspended in recent years, and he believes young people can help restore it.
The Tinmaalgo Festival Committee Chairman, Stephen Abeo Atalegna, said the festival is on the theme, “Peace, Unity and the Role of the Youth,” which aims to foster peace, unity, and development through the efforts of young people.
The first Assembly Member for the Kalbeo Electoral Area, Godwin Akapire, speaking on behalf of the chief and elders of Kalbeo, highlighted the history of the Tinmaalgo Festival since 1994 and its role in promoting development in the community. He welcomed the decision to revive the festival and assured the chief and elders of their support for the event.
