Returning Bawumia as candidate would be risky for NPP, Kennedy Agyapong campaign coordinator warns

Stanley Krugu Mort, Upper East Regional Coordinator for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, says it would be “dangerous” for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to select Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia again as its presidential candidate, arguing that campaign narratives from the 2024 elections could be used against the party in 2028.

In an interview with A1 Radio ahead of the Jan. 31 NPP presidential primaries, Mort said the party must reflect on the 2024 loss and choose a new direction.

“Going back to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be very dangerous because statements made during the last election will be used against us,” he said.

Mort claimed that political messaging tied to regional identity during the 2024 campaign did not yield the expected electoral advantage and should not be repeated.

“We all worked very hard, but unfortunately, we lost,” he said, adding that the party’s performance in both presidential and parliamentary races was “very bad.”

He argued that the NPP needs a candidate who can attract broader national support in what he described as an expected “ding-dong battle” in 2028, when both major parties are likely to present new dynamics.

Mort urged delegates not to base their decisions on personal or regional ties.

“Politics is not about brotherhood. Politics is about who can give you power,” he said.
