The District Chief Executive for the Bolgatanga East Assembly, Jacob Abugre Aka-eri, has revealed that the Zuarungu Main Market has been earmarked for the government’s 24-hour market initiative.
He has therefore appealed to residents who have built houses and shop owners operating close to the market to, as a matter of urgency, pave the way or relocate to allow for the construction of the 24-hour market facility. He further disclosed that a committee is being set up to oversee the relocation and related processes.
The Zuarungu Main Market has long served as a central hub for trade and commerce, attracting buyers and sellers from within and beyond the Bolgatanga East District.
However, with increasing economic activity and the need to boost local trade, there is a growing proposal to transform the traditional market into a 24-hour market. This initiative aims to extend trading hours and stimulate continuous economic activity.
To address anticipated challenges and maximize the benefits of a 24-hour market system, plans are underway to develop modern market infrastructure. Key components of the proposal include enhanced security measures, such as the installation of robust systems including CCTV cameras, adequate lighting, and the deployment of dedicated security personnel.
Another major component, according to the DCE, is the construction of a secure perimeter fence around the market to prevent unauthorized access and ensure the safety of traders and buyers, especially during night hours.
Improving the road network is also a priority. This will involve upgrading existing roads leading to and within the market to facilitate easy access for buyers, sellers, and transport operators at all times.
Mr. Aka-eri further explained that transforming the old market in the Bolgatanga East District into a modern 24-hour market is a strategic initiative that promises to revitalize trade and commerce in the Upper East Region. By investing in security, infrastructure, and accessibility, the market can become a model of modern development while preserving its cultural heritage.
He emphasized that the proposal requires collaborative efforts from local authorities, traders, and development partners to realize this vision for sustainable economic growth.
The Bolgatanga East District Chief Executive made these remarks on Bolga FM’s Tingmaalgo Sanga programme with Joseph Napoleon Anaaya on February 17, 2026.
