The Upper East Regional Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), James Konzabre, has handed over essential tools and equipment to the first batch of apprentices and master craftspersons in the region. The programme aims to empower youth and develop skills in trades including carpentry, hairdressing, and garment making.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Mr. Konzabre said the programme fulfills the government’s promise to provide skills training for those without formal education. He noted that the government covers the full cost of training, including tools, stipends, and master trainer fees.

“Government is delivering on its promises. We pledged to set up an apprenticeship programme for those who, for one reason or another, did not complete formal education. These beneficiaries are now being enrolled in a programme where government undertakes the full cost of their training,” he said.

According to Mr. Konzabre, over 1,200 apprentices and 250 master craftsmen are benefiting from the programme in the Upper East Region. Training durations vary from six months to one and a half years, depending on the trade.

“In Upper East, we are looking at over 1,200 apprentices and approximately 250 master craftsmen across all districts,” he explained.

He further emphasized that the programme aims to bridge the skills gap in Ghana and enable beneficiaries to become self-employed. The government will continue to recruit and train more apprentices, with the next batch expected in March.

“Government recognized that it is challenging to employ everyone in the formal sector. There was an urgent need for a programme like this so that people could acquire skills and become self-reliant,” he added.

Beneficiaries expressed excitement and hope that the programme will positively shape their futures.

The distribution of tools and equipment commenced on Monday, February 16, 2026, in the Bolgatanga East and Nabdam districts. The District Chief Executive of Bolgatanga East, Jacob Abugre Aka-Eri, and the DCE for Nabdam, Francis Tobig, applauded the initiative, noting that it will significantly benefit the districts.
