He also emphasized growing interest in the university, revealing that for the 2025/2026 academic year, the institution received 2,216 applications, out of which 1,856 students were admitted, representing a three percent increase compared to the previous year.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor further announced the introduction of new academic programmes aimed at meeting industry demands. These include Master of Technology in Hospitality Management; Master of Technology in Construction Management; Master of Science in Financial Engineering; Master of Technology in Accounting Technology; Master of Science in Business Management and Enterprise Leadership; Bachelor of Technology in Renewable Energy Engineering; Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering; Diploma in Graphic and Communication Design; and Diploma in Furniture Design.
Highlighting some of the university’s achievements, Prof. Boamah mentioned strengthened industry collaborations, including the inauguration of a Programme Advisory Committee focused on Ecological Agriculture, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Computing and IT. The initiative is supported by the European Union and the U.N. Capital Development Fund to enhance digital skills training and graduate employability.
He also noted partnerships with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE)-Ghana under the Mastercard Foundation Phase II Bursary Programme to support students from underrepresented communities, as well as collaboration with the Design Technology Institute to integrate competency-based learning and precision quality training into the university’s curriculum.
Additionally, the university implemented a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights project in partnership with Youth Challenge International to support youth across the Upper East Region through health education and social development initiatives.
Despite these achievements, the Acting Vice-Chancellor outlined several challenges confronting the university, including the urgent need for a lecture hall complex to accommodate increasing student numbers and limited academic space. He also cited inadequate office accommodation and modern equipment for academic and administrative staff, stressing the need for greater government and private sector investment to support the institution’s growth.
The Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Bishop Akolgo, congratulated the graduates and emphasized the importance of research and innovation in transforming the Upper East Region. He pointed to emerging economic opportunities in the region, including ongoing development initiatives and the discovery of minerals, urging the university and its graduates to ensure that such developments benefit local communities through research, innovation and enterprise.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the university was commended for its contribution to skills development and socio-economic transformation in the region.
The speech, read by the Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, highlighted the critical role of technical universities in producing skilled professionals capable of addressing the demands of a rapidly changing global economy. The minister urged graduates to embrace lifelong learning, uphold integrity and use the knowledge and skills acquired to solve real problems in their communities and contribute to national development.
