The Mirigu Pungbisi community in the Upper East Region has launched a community-driven vocational initiative aimed at tackling unemployment and improving livelihoods.

The project, known as the Mirigu Pungbisi Vocational Festival, is designed to promote skills development in areas such as weaving, basket weaving, modeling and other handcrafts, with the goal of equipping young people with employable skills.

Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga with David Azure, the Chief of Mirigu Pungbisi, Naba Alagitaaba Francis Awineparigiga Anaafo, said the community faces significant socio-economic challenges, largely due to high unemployment and limited access to basic services. He noted that plans are underway to establish a vocational training center to support the initiative.

He identified access to electricity as a major challenge in the predominantly farming community and also highlighted the lack of potable water. According to him, residents rely on a single mechanized borehole provided by Engaged Africa.

On health care, the chief said inadequate facilities make it difficult for residents to access quality medical services.

He added that the upcoming festival will bring together traditional leaders, assembly members and other dignitaries to mobilize support for the project.
