A former Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Awenyue Syme, has passed away. The news of his death was made public on Monday, March 16, 2026, by his son, Jonathan A. Syme, in a Facebook post.

In the emotional tribute, Jonathan Syme described his father as a resilient and selfless public servant who dedicated much of his life to the service of others.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of my dad, Hon. Daniel Awenyue Syme. He was the most resilient person I know. Doctors told him years ago that he would not make it this long, but he defied all odds and pushed till today,” he wrote.

Daniel Awenyue Syme served as Deputy Regional Minister in the Upper East Region from 2012 to 2016. During that period, he worked first under the then Regional Minister Ephraim Avea Nsoh and later under James Zuuga Tiigah.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Regional Minister, Mr. Syme held several key public service roles. He served as District Secretary and later District Chief Executive of the Builsa District from 1990 to 2001, where he played a significant role in the administration and development of the district.

He later worked with the Audit Service of Ghana, where he rose to the position of Assistant Auditor General. According to his son, the late Mr. Syme was widely respected as both a politician and an auditor, known for his integrity, dedication, and commitment to public service.

“My dad was a model politician and auditor, which can be attested by everyone who knew him. He gave everything he had to the betterment of others and always put himself last,” Jonathan Syme noted.

Despite the family’s grief, he expressed gratitude to God for sustaining his father beyond medical expectations and for allowing him to pass peacefully.

“Even though we are sad, we thank God Almighty for sustaining him beyond what experts said and calling him back without any suffering,” he added.

The family has indicated that funeral arrangements for the late Daniel Awenyue Syme will be announced in due course.
