Fish die-off as Dorongo dam dries up

The Dorongo Dam, a vital source of fish and livelihoods for the community and surrounding areas, is facing a severe crisis as it dries up—leaving thousands of fish dead and fingerlings nowhere to be found just four months after the rainy season.

Residents, fishermen and fishmongers are raising alarm, warning of a possible collapse of fish stocks in the dam. Once teeming with aquatic life, the dam now presents a grim scene, with lifeless fish scattered across its bed.

“The fish here used to support families—not just in Dorongo, but across Bolgatanga and the region as a whole. People from Bongo and other areas come to fish here. It is heartbreaking to see it die off like this,” said Paul Aloliga.

Residents who spoke to A1 News said the drying of the dam has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only fishing but also farming and animal husbandry.

“Animals drink from it, and we use it for irrigation. When the dam dries up, we all suffer,” said Ayingura Abagna.

The community is calling on the Fisheries Commission to restock the dam when the rains return.

“We will be very happy if they can help us,” a fishmonger said. “This fish supports many people in the community and beyond.”

Assembly member for the area, Richmond Atura, said the situation underscores the urgent need for rehabilitation and sustainable management of the dam to prevent long-term damage to the ecosystem and local economy.
