The National President of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG), Hamza Hafiz, has emphasized that the legalization of tricycle operations is not a license for recklessness.
Speaking at the union’s inauguration ceremony in Bolgatanga, he stressed that operators must respect passengers and adhere to rules governing their operations. “You have to look presentable and respect your passengers so that they can also respect you,” he said.
Mr. Hafiz noted that some operators are their own worst enemies, citing issues like indecent dressing and substance abuse. “Do you expect respect? Do you expect somebody to respect you?” he asked.
He also expressed concern about foreigners operating tricycles without proper licenses or language skills and urged members to police themselves to avoid problems. The union is working with authorities to ensure that only qualified operators are on the roads.
According to him, the government, through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), is set to introduce new commercial licenses for tricycle operators, emphasizing the need for professionalism and safety.
The NUTOG President also called on regional executives to establish task forces to work hand in hand with the Ghana Police Service and the Road Safety Authority to ensure discipline on the roads.
