Residents of Telania in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region are celebrating a long-awaited intervention aimed at ending years of struggle for potable water, following the commissioning of a borehole by the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo.

For decades, access to clean drinking water has remained a major challenge for the community, particularly for women and children who often walk long distances daily in search of water.

The situation has affected health, economic activities, and education, as significant time is spent fetching water.

The community’s plight gained attention during the 2024 electioneering period when Mr. Aworigo, then parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress, promised to provide a sustainable water solution if elected.

Fulfilling that pledge, the MP commissioned the drilling of a borehole for the community on Monday, April 6, marking a step toward addressing one of their most pressing needs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Aworigo emphasised the importance of water to human survival and development.

“Water is life, and access to safe and clean drinking water is a basic necessity that every community deserves,” he said.

He noted that the project forms part of his broader commitment to improving living conditions in the constituency.

“This is in fulfilment of my promise to provide potable water to communities in my constituency. I remain committed to addressing the social needs of my people,” he added.

Mr. Aworigo also urged residents to take ownership of the project by monitoring the contractor to ensure quality work and long-term sustainability.

On behalf of the community, Mr. Fankey Franklin, branch chairman of the NDC in Telania, expressed gratitude to the MP for delivering on his promise.

“We are grateful to the Honourable Member of Parliament for bringing this project to our doorstep. As the saying goes, ‘he who brings water brings life,’” he said.

Women and children, who are most affected by the water crisis, expressed joy at the development, describing it as life-changing and pledging to maintain the facility.

The borehole is expected to ease the burden of water collection and improve health and sanitation in the community. For residents, it represents not only access to water but renewed hope for a better future.
