Youth in Nabdam encouraged to tap into farming support programme

A community assembly member in the Nabdam District is urging young people to take full advantage of a new agricultural initiative aimed at boosting incomes and reducing unemployment in rural communities.

Joseph Yempusak Nyagre, assembly member for Kotintabig, made the appeal during the launch of an input shop under the Boost-to-Bloom project, implemented by the Agrihouse Foundation in partnership with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and the Mastercard Foundation.

The initiative is designed to support smallholder farmers by improving access to essential agricultural inputs within their communities.

Nyagre described the project as a critical opportunity for youth empowerment, particularly for young people in remote areas who often lack access to farming resources.

“I want to plead with my community members, especially the young girls and boys, to take this opportunity and utilize it to our benefit,” he said.

He stressed that active participation in the initiative could lead to improved income generation and more sustainable livelihoods.

The input shop is expected to ease one of the major challenges faced by farmers in the area, access to farming supplies. Previously, many farmers had to travel long distances to nearby towns to purchase inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and agrochemicals.

Nyagre noted that communities like Kotintabig are often far removed from major commercial centers, making access both costly and time-consuming.

“This programme has come at the right time and will go a long way to support us,” he said.

The Boost-to-Bloom project is part of broader efforts by development partners to strengthen agribusiness in northern Ghana, with a focus on youth engagement, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

By decentralising access to inputs and strengthening local agricultural systems, the initiative aims to increase productivity, reduce post-planting delays and create economic opportunities for rural youth.
