The Talensi District Assembly has inaugurated the Talensi District Blue Water Guards as part of efforts to protect water bodies from pollution and promote responsible environmental stewardship in the mineral-rich district.
The inauguration ceremony brought together traditional authorities, security agencies, officials of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, members of the Blue Water Guards and other stakeholders committed to safeguarding the district’s natural resources.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Talensi District Chief Executive, John Millim Nabwomya, described the initiative as a timely intervention to address the environmental challenges associated with mining activities in the district.
He acknowledged the vital role mining plays in creating jobs and driving economic growth but stressed that the exploitation of mineral resources must be balanced with the protection of the environment.
“Talensi is blessed with abundant mineral resources, but while mining contributes significantly to economic growth and livelihoods, it must be pursued alongside environmental sustainability,” he said.
Mr. Nabwomya called on residents, traditional authorities, licensed mining companies and all stakeholders to support the Blue Water Guards through cooperation and timely information sharing to ensure the success of the initiative.
He also urged members of the newly inaugurated task force to discharge their responsibilities with discipline, professionalism, integrity and patriotism while respecting the rule of law.
Delivering a message on behalf of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Stephen Abgo underscored the importance of the Blue Water Guards programme in protecting Ghana’s land and water resources from environmental degradation.
He encouraged the officers to remain impartial, diligent and committed to their mandate, while appealing to communities to collaborate with them in safeguarding rivers and other natural resources.
The representative noted that protecting water bodies is a shared responsibility and called for sustained cooperation among communities, security agencies and regulatory institutions to combat illegal mining and other environmentally harmful activities.
The inauguration forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address environmental degradation, promote responsible mining practices and empower local communities to play an active role in protecting the country’s natural heritage.
The ceremony was attended by the District Police Commander, District Fire Commander, District BNI Officer, the Chief of Baare representing the Talensi Traditional Council, officials from the Minerals Commission’s Tamale and Bolgatanga offices, representatives of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, members of the Blue Water Guards and other distinguished guests.
