Sachet water producers in Upper East worried over rising costs, worker shortages

Sachet water producers in Ghana’s Upper East Region are warning that their businesses are under severe strain due to rising production costs, with some operators struggling to retain workers.

The Regional Secretary of the Sachet Water Producers Association, Moses Nsoh, said producers are facing mounting financial pressure, leading to an exodus of staff.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Nsoh explained that reducing prices is not an option, as it would worsen their losses.

“We are making more losses and are not even able to maintain or break even,” he said, describing the situation as critical.

He noted that producers are calling for a review of the current pricing structure, following a recent adjustment that set the ex-factory price at about GH¢7 per bag in the region.

Mr. Nsoh stressed that producers are not making profits but are instead struggling to stay afloat amid increasing costs.

The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers had earlier announced a nationwide price increase, citing rising polymer costs and global supply disruptions.

However, some analysts have argued for stronger regulatory frameworks, including competition laws, to address concerns about price-setting and protect consumers, particularly low-income households that depend on sachet water.

Mr. Nsoh said the situation in the Upper East Region is especially difficult, with producers finding it hard to attract and retain young workers.

“We are currently facing a lot of problems, and we are aware that the youth nowadays prefer jobs where they can earn more, so many of them are leaving,” he said.
