The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has represented President John Dramani Mahama at the Pungu Peace and Development Festival held in Navrongo in the Upper East Region.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the President, Mr. Adongo expressed appreciation to the chiefs and people of Navrongo for their consistent support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), noting that their loyalty significantly contributed to the party’s success in securing 15 parliamentary seats.
He emphasized that President Mahama maintains a strong personal connection with the people of Navrongo, built over years of political and social engagement.
Highlighting government interventions in education, Mr. Adongo disclosed that the President has released uncapped GETFund resources amounting to GH¢10 million to support infrastructural development for the 2025–2026 academic year.
He described the move as unprecedented under Ghana’s Fourth Republic and announced that from April 13, 2026, about 70 development projects would be rolled out across the Upper East Region.
According to him, the projects will span several educational institutions, including Yameriga Senior High School, Bolga-Sherigu SHS, Navrongo SHS, Bawku SHS, and Sandema SHS, among others. The interventions will also include the construction of classroom blocks, sanitation facilities, and the establishment of the region’s first STEM-focused secondary school.
On infrastructure, Mr. Adongo pointed to key road projects under the government’s “Big Push” agenda, citing the China–Tumu road and ongoing efforts to secure funding for the Bolgatanga–Bawku road.
He also praised ongoing municipal development initiatives in Navrongo, including the construction of CHPS compounds and classroom blocks, describing them as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving livelihoods.
Touching on agriculture, the MP recalled earlier efforts by President Mahama to mobilize GH¢25 million for the rehabilitation of the Tono and Vea irrigation dams. He, however, criticized the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for allegedly mismanaging the funds under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.
He assured residents that the current administration remains committed to securing sustainable funding to revitalize irrigation infrastructure critical to farming activities in the region.
As part of the festival, Mr. Adongo, on behalf of the President, donated GH¢40,000 as seed capital towards the establishment of a girl-child education fund for the Navro-Pungu community.
He also outlined the President’s vision for strengthening regional cooperation, particularly through diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, to enhance cross-border development.
On the Bolgatanga Airport project, Mr. Adongo commended the government for honoring its commitment and acknowledged the role of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, led by Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga, as well as the chiefs and people of Sumbrungu for facilitating land acquisition. He further praised Parliament for approving the project and recognized the advocacy efforts of Alagumgube.
