The Chief of Kandiga Naba Henry Abawine Amega-Etigo II, has appealed to the government to establish a vocational training centre in the community to help tackle youth unemployment.

He said the centre would equip young people, especially women, with skills to become self-reliant and reduce migration to southern cities in search of work.

Speaking at a youth association homecoming event at Bembisi Primary School, the chief said many young women migrate to cities such as Accra and Kumasi to engage in head porterage, locally known as “kayayei,” and other menial jobs.

“For some time now, I have been advocating for a vocational training centre in Bembisi to help curb the migration of young women,” he said.

He noted that agriculture remains the main source of livelihood in the area but added that skills such as sewing, weaving, and craft-making could provide alternative income opportunities.

“These skills will enable young women to stay, work, and contribute meaningfully to the development of the community,” he said.

The chief also highlighted water scarcity as a major challenge facing the community, linking it to climate change and migration.

“I cannot say I am proud of our water sources. The quality is poor, and people depend on the same dam and a few boreholes, which become muddy as they are shared with cattle,” he said.

He added that water sources are drying up, making access difficult for residents and affecting livelihoods.
