The Paga Youth Movement has called on government to prioritise the completion of the Agenda 111 hospital project in the Kassena-Nankana West District, describing it as critical to improving healthcare delivery in the area.
The appeal was made during a stakeholder engagement with the District Chief Executive (DCE), Stephen Aeke Akurugo, as part of his ongoing revenue mobilisation drive across the district.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Secretary Mandala Kassim Mubashir commended the DCE for engaging the community but stressed the urgent need to complete the nearly finished hospital facility.
“We are pleased that the Agenda 111 hospital project is about 90 percent complete. We are pleading with government to ensure its completion, especially if some projects are to be prioritised,” he said.
He noted that access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge for residents and completing the facility would significantly ease pressure on existing health centres and improve service delivery.
Beyond healthcare, the youth group raised several development concerns affecting the district, including poor road networks, inadequate water supply, sanitation challenges, and the need for proper registration of public lands.
Mr. Mubashir emphasized that the registration of public lands would prevent future disputes and make it easier for government to undertake development projects without delays.
The group also highlighted sanitation issues within the Paga Market, noting the absence of functional toilet facilities and waste disposal sites, which they described as a major inconvenience to both traders and visitors.
They further called for improvements in road infrastructure, stating that routine reshaping exercises have not been effective and, in some cases, worsen road conditions.
On water supply, the youth appealed for the extension of services by the Ghana Water Company Limited to the area, arguing that reliance on limited community water systems is insufficient for the growing population.
Security concerns at Navio, a neighbouring community, were also raised, with the group urging authorities to investigate ongoing chieftaincy disputes and ensure lasting peace in the area.
The youth also expressed concern about management issues at the Paga hospital, citing instances where patients are unable to access care due to the absence of medical staff on duty.
Despite the concerns, the group commended the DCE for his engagement and responsiveness to community needs, particularly his support for initiatives such as the proposed 24-hour economy market and the establishment of an animal market.
Responding to the concerns, Mr. Akurugo reiterated that improving internally generated funds would enable the assembly to address key development challenges, including water, sanitation, and infrastructure deficits. He assured residents of his commitment to inclusive governance and pledged to continue engaging stakeholders to drive development across the district.
