The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has taken steps to address the challenge of retaining medical doctors in the municipality by providing temporary accommodation, with plans underway to construct permanent housing for health professionals.
The intervention follows concerns that several doctors posted to the Upper East Region declined their postings due to lack of accommodation and other essential services.
Speaking during a tour to commission and inspect projects across the constituency, Mr. Adongo disclosed that he had already rented houses for two newly posted doctors who were considering leaving the area.
“I have subsequently rented two houses for them, and I will go and hand over those facilities to those doctors,” he said, adding that the move was necessary to ensure that residents continue to access healthcare services.
He further revealed plans to provide a long-term solution to the accommodation deficit.
“In the future, I intend to build permanent structures to accommodate our newly posted doctors so that when they are brought here, they feel happy and comfortable to take care of us and our health needs,” he stated.
Mr. Adongo made the remarks after commissioning a number of projects, including a maternity block and a kindergarten facility, as well as inspecting other interventions such as grinding mills across communities.
He explained that his approach to development is driven by the specific needs of constituents rather than political promises.
“The truth is that I don’t promise. I get them to tell me what they want and I work towards resolving what these issues are,” he said.
According to him, the newly commissioned school and maternity facilities at the Anateem community were completed within three months after being identified as urgent needs by the community.
Beyond infrastructure, the MP indicated that efforts are underway to strengthen healthcare delivery in anticipation of the government’s free primary healthcare initiative.
“I have asked the municipal director of health to give me an assessment of the primary health care facilities in the constituency so that I can approach my colleague minister for health to see how I can facilitate the refurbishing of some of the facilities,” he added.
Mr. Adongo also outlined plans to boost local economic activities through agriculture, including the introduction of a grassroots integrated agriculture project, aquaculture initiatives, and the provision of tractors to support farmers.
He assured constituents of his commitment to development, noting that ongoing projects across the municipality would demonstrate his performance.
“With Isaac Adongo, Bolga will not only be popular in the country, but Bolga will see development and that is what I’m aiming to do,” he said.
