The Catholic Education Unit of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese has raised concern over what it describes as increasing parental neglect, saying it is affecting children’s academic performance and moral development in schools across the Diocese.

Speaking on challenges in the education sector, Regional Manager Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii said many parents are failing to take active responsibility in the academic and social development of their children.

She said the situation is contributing to poor academic performance, indiscipline, absenteeism, and declining interest in education among students.

Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii said some parents do not monitor academic progress, attend Parent-Teacher Association meetings, provide learning materials, or create supportive home environments for learning.

She stressed that education is a shared responsibility involving parents, teachers, communities, religious bodies, and government, noting that schools cannot effectively discipline and guide children without parental support.

The Unit said parental neglect is also contributing to truancy, examination malpractice, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and other social challenges among school children.

It therefore urged parents and guardians to take a more active role by supervising homework, encouraging discipline, ensuring regular school attendance, and maintaining close collaboration with teachers.

The Unit also called on communities, stakeholders, and religious organisations to support efforts to promote responsible parenting and improve child welfare.

It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting quality education, moral formation, and discipline within the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese and beyond.
