A sanitation campaign by Charger Limited, producers of Happy Man Bitters, is using cash rewards to encourage plastic waste collection and promote cleaner communities across northern Ghana.

The “Collect, Drop & Win” promotion, launched in December 2025 and ending in March 2026, encouraged consumers to collect and deposit empty 50ml Happy Man Bitters sachets at designated collection centres in exchange for points and cash prizes.

The initiative, led by Charger Limited founder and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Bortey Borketey, was introduced as part of efforts to address increasing plastic waste in communities across the north.

Speaking ahead of the grand awards ceremony scheduled for May 10 in the Upper East Region, Mr. Borketey said sanitation should be seen as a shared responsibility.

“Sanitation is not the responsibility of government alone; it is the responsibility of all of us,” he said.

“Every plastic bottle picked up, every gutter kept clean, and every responsible action taken by an individual contributes to a healthier and safer community.”

According to him, the campaign aims to encourage behavioural change and community participation in environmental protection.

“At Charger Limited, we want people to understand that they are not powerless in the fight against pollution. Small actions, when multiplied across communities, create lasting change,” he stated.

“Through the Collect, Drop & Win Promo, we are encouraging a culture where people see cleanliness not as a task, but as a civic duty and a way of protecting our future generations.”

Thousands of sachets were reportedly collected during the campaign across the Upper East Region and other parts of northern Ghana.

A leaderboard released by organisers showed participants from Bolgatanga Municipal, Kasena Nankana, Talensi, Bongo, Garu, and Builsa North among the top performers.

Badesam Kalou from Kasena Nankana led the competition with 76,951 points, followed by Adolnaba Emmanuel Abane from Bolgatanga Municipal with 67,807 points, while Atongo Nyaabila, also from Bolgatanga Municipal, placed third with 64,600 points.

Winners are expected to receive cash prizes during the awards ceremony, which will also feature the Upper East Music Awards.

Organisers say the campaign aligns with broader efforts to improve waste management, recycling, and environmental awareness in communities facing growing plastic pollution challenges.

The event is expected to attract media organisations, entertainment stakeholders, and members of the public.
