The District Chief Executive for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurungo, has commissioned a new animal market in Paga aimed at improving local trade and strengthening cross-border commercial activity.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Paga, brought together chiefs, opinion leaders, assembly members and residents.

Mr. Akurungo said the project was in response to repeated appeals from residents for a dedicated livestock trading facility in the area.

“Many of the concerned indigenes in Paga came to my office to appeal for an animal market to be constructed in the heart of the town to serve both the locals and the international community. Upon listening to them, I quickly gave it a thought, and today we are here to commission it for the district,” he said.

The market is expected to create jobs for residents, improve livestock trading activities with neighbouring communities and strengthen economic ties across the border. It is also expected to support livestock farmers by providing a more organised trading environment.

Mr. Akurungo said the assembly plans to equip the facility with key infrastructure, including an abattoir, reliable water supply, electricity and animal shelters to improve its functionality and attract more traders.

However, he warned residents against engaging in the sale of stolen livestock, cautioning that such practices could undermine the credibility and success of the market.

The commissioning of the market marks a key milestone for the Kassena-Nankana West District, with authorities expressing optimism about improved livelihoods and expanded trade opportunities.
