The government has selected the Agenda 111 hospital project in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region among 35 hospital projects across the country to be prioritised for completion under the first phase of the programme.

The District Chief Executive for the Kassena Nankana West District Assembly, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, disclosed this while delivering his sessional address during the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the conference hall of Motel in Paga.

According to the DCE, the Agenda 111 hospital project in the district is currently about 70 percent complete and has been identified by government as one of the priority projects to be completed during the first phase, as announced by President John Dramani Mahama.

“Hon. Presiding Member, the Agenda 111 hospital project in the Kassena-Nankana West District, which is currently about 70 percent complete, is among the 35 hospitals to be prioritised for completion during the first phase, as declared by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.

Mr. Akurugo noted that the completion of the hospital would significantly strengthen healthcare delivery within the district and improve access to quality medical services for residents.

He further disclosed that the Kassena-Nankana West District had also been selected as one of 150 districts nationwide to benefit from the Free Primary Health Care Initiative launched by President Mahama in April 2026 to advance Universal Health Coverage in Ghana.

According to him, the initiative is expected to provide free essential healthcare services at primary healthcare facilities while strengthening preventive and community-based healthcare delivery systems.

“The programme will provide free essential health services at primary health facilities, strengthen preventive and community-based care through public education, community volunteers, and home visitation services, and improve outreach through the provision of tricycles,” he explained.

The DCE stated that the intervention would help ease transportation challenges and improve access to healthcare services across communities within the district once fully implemented.

Mr. Akurugo also revealed that the District Health Directorate had completed and handed over a children’s ward at the Kassena Nankana East Health Centre using its Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

However, he indicated that an office accommodation project initiated by the Directorate with the same source of funding had stalled at the foundation level due to inadequate financial resources.

Despite the challenges, the DCE expressed optimism that ongoing government interventions and health infrastructure projects would contribute to improving healthcare delivery and the well-being of residents in the district.
