Women engaged in basket weaving at Sumbrungu-Adua in the Upper East Region have expressed appreciation for support towards their livelihood activities, describing the intervention as timely in strengthening production and sustaining household income.
Dr. Anthony Akunzule, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, donated Ghc3,000 to the Adua Sumaansum Women Group to support basket weaving, which serves as a key source of income for many women in the community.
The donation follows his recognition with the Joy News WASH and Women Empowerment Award for his contributions to sanitation and community development initiatives aimed at improving living conditions in local communities.
He visited the community together with Reverend Father Francis Adagyine, where they observed the women engaged in basket weaving and interacted with them at their workspace.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Akunzule said the intervention reflects his commitment to supporting women engaged in small-scale economic activities.
“When you help a woman, you help everyone. I am very happy to be here to see how your work is going and how we can support you. That is why we have brought this support for you,” he said.
Reverend Father Francis Adagyine noted that basket weaving remains an important source of income for many women in the area, providing steady support for households and contributing to the local economy.
Members of the Adua Sumaansum Women Group expressed appreciation for the support, saying the donation will be used to purchase materials to expand production and improve output.
They added that the assistance will strengthen their work and help improve income levels for members.
The visit also included discussions on how to sustain basket weaving as a long-term livelihood activity and strengthen its role in supporting household income in Sumbrungu-Adua.
