The Union of May Borns (UMABO) has attained a significant milestone after securing incorporation from the Registrar of Companies of Ghana, a development members say will strengthen the union’s capacity to implement impactful social interventions.

The certificate of incorporation was officially unveiled during the union’s annual get-together held at the Social Centre in Bolgatanga on Saturday, May 30, 2026, as members marked the end of their yearly celebrations.

Speaking at the event, President of UMABO, William Jalulah, described the incorporation as a major achievement that provides the union with the legal backing needed to undertake larger projects and engage more effectively with institutions and development partners.

“This year’s celebration is special because towards the end of last year, we were able to get the union incorporated. UMABO is now a legally incorporated union, and that gives us the leverage to pursue initiatives and projects within the legal framework of Ghana,” he said.

Mr. Jalulah noted that since its formation in 2011, UMABO has consistently undertaken community-focused activities, including blood donation exercises, clean-up campaigns, welfare support for members, media engagement activities, and donations to newborn babies across health facilities in the Upper East Region.

As part of this year’s celebrations, the union donated assorted baby products and toiletries to 76 newborn babies in three health facilities. The beneficiaries included 37 babies at the Upper East Regional Hospital, 21 at the Bongo District Hospital, and 18 at the Talensi District Hospital in Tongo.

According to him, the initiative aims not only to support mothers and newborns but also to maintain contact with beneficiaries to monitor their wellbeing.

“One of the things that excites us is the smiles we put on the faces of mothers. We take records of these mothers and babies and follow up to see how they are doing,” he stated.

The celebrations also featured a friendly football match between UMABO and members of the media, which ended in a goalless draw.

Mr. Jalulah explained that obtaining legal status would enable the union to establish stronger administrative and financial systems. For the first time since its establishment, UMABO now has the authority to operate a bank account and merchant payment platforms to facilitate contributions and support from members and well-wishers.

He added that the incorporation would enhance the union’s credibility when seeking partnerships and support from philanthropic organisations, institutions, and individuals.

“With this certificate, people will know that we are a well-organised body with a constitution and a clear mandate. It gives us more power to initiate projects in areas such as health, education and other important social issues,” he said.

The union’s leadership is also considering amendments to its constitution to align with its new legal status and future development plans.

Looking ahead, Mr. Jalulah said UMABO would continue its traditional welfare and social activities while exploring new initiatives aimed at improving the lives of members and contributing meaningfully to society.

Founded in 2011, UMABO seeks to unite individuals born in the month of May, promote their welfare, and mobilise support for community development initiatives across the region.
