The Gundoug Health Centre in the Nabdam District has transitioned from its humble beginnings in 2018 as a mud-structured health post near the Gundoug Basic School to a modern healthcare centre with the addition of a maternity block, courtesy of the Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark-Kurt Nawaane.
The latest facility, funded under the 10 per cent District Assemblies Common Fund, is expected to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare delivery in the area, serving close to a thousand clients and surrounding communities.
Dr. Nawaane, who is also the Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, emphasised that access to quality healthcare remains a national priority, stressing that healthcare delivery must be dignified and accessible to all citizens.
“When it comes to the health facility, you can’t just go and put me anywhere and say I should go to the health facility over there,” he stated, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure and standards across health facilities in rural communities.
The upgrade has been widely welcomed by health workers, who say the expansion has eased long-standing challenges in service delivery.
Ayine Lydia, a midwife at the facility, recounted the difficulties they previously faced due to limited space.
According to her, the old labour room could accommodate only one delivery bed, forcing staff to make uncomfortable arrangements when multiple patients arrived in labour.
“Previously, our labour room was very, very small and it couldn’t contain like two to three clients,” she said.
“We had to send some clients to the antenatal care room, which was not comfortable for both the patients and myself.”
She noted that the new maternity block now provides a spacious labour ward that can accommodate up to five clients at a time, alongside an improved antenatal care room.
The District Health Director, Salifu Sadia, described the development as a major boost for healthcare in the area, noting that the facility is now better positioned to serve nearly a thousand clients in Gundoug and surrounding communities.
Contractor Jacob Azumah of Messrs Win Mails Limited said the project was completed within six months, commending community members for their cooperation throughout the construction period.
The project forms part of ongoing efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure in the Nabdam District and improve maternal health outcomes across the Upper East Region.
