The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has joined the global community in commemorating World Food Safety Day 2026, using the occasion to promote safe food practices and strengthen public awareness on food safety.

This year’s observance is under the theme, “From Burden to Solutions: Safe Food Everywhere,” which focuses on addressing food safety challenges through practical and sustainable measures that protect public health.

According to the Acting Upper East Regional Head of the FDA, Abel Ndego, the theme reflects a shift from recognising the burden of foodborne diseases to implementing effective solutions that ensure food safety throughout the food value chain.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that food consumed across Ghana meets established safety and quality standards. The Authority said it continues to implement measures including food product registration, licensing of food establishments, routine inspections, laboratory testing, and the enforcement of food safety regulations.

The Authority also highlighted its role in monitoring both locally produced and imported food products to prevent unsafe or substandard goods from reaching consumers.

According to the FDA, collaboration with industry stakeholders, local authorities, and international partners remains critical to strengthening food safety systems and responding to emerging public health risks.

The Authority noted that public education continues to be a key component of its food safety strategy. Through awareness campaigns, community outreach programmes, and sensitisation activities, it seeks to promote good hygiene practices, proper food handling, and informed consumer choices.

As part of activities marking World Food Safety Day 2026, the FDA announced a series of nationwide initiatives aimed at increasing food safety awareness and encouraging responsible food practices.

These include market durbars and sensitisation programmes in major marketplaces to educate food vendors, wholesalers, and consumers on proper food storage and hygiene practices.

The Authority will also conduct sensitisation programmes in primary and secondary schools to teach students the “Golden Rules” of food safety. Community outreach activities will further be held in churches, mosques, and local communities to engage citizens and local leaders on the importance of food safety.

The FDA stressed that ensuring safe food for all is a shared responsibility requiring the active participation of food producers, processors, vendors, institutions, and consumers.

It therefore urged the public to remain vigilant, follow recommended food safety practices, and report suspected unsafe food products to the Authority.

“Together, through collective effort and sustained commitment, Ghana can move from burden to solutions and achieve safe food for all,” the Ag. Regional Manager for FDA stated.
