The Chief of Bongo Soe Soboko, Naba Amaltinga Anamlebna Sebastian Saaba Daana, has urged communities to embrace aquaculture and other livelihood programmes as tools for job creation and local economic development.
Speaking during the community’s first tilapia harvest under the government’s Aquaculture for Food and Jobs (AFJ) Programme, the chief said fish farming has the potential to create employment opportunities for young people, women, and other community members.
He said the initiative was introduced through collaboration between the traditional authority, the Assembly Member, and the Fisheries Commission to improve livelihoods in Bongo Soe.
“When our youth have decent jobs and are engaged in productive work, they are less likely to engage in social vices. This project is creating jobs and bringing development to our community,” he said.
Naba Amaltinga commended the Fisheries Commission and residents for their support in making the project successful, adding that the harvest demonstrates the potential of aquaculture to improve food security and household incomes.
He called on traditional leaders across the Upper East Region to partner with government agencies and development organisations to introduce similar initiatives in their communities.
The chief said expanding livelihood projects such as fish farming would help address unemployment and promote sustainable development.
The Bongo Soe fish farming project is being implemented under the AFJ Programme, which provides beneficiary communities with fish fingerlings, feed, technical training, and extension support to increase aquaculture production.
