Elvis Figo Awonekai elected NPP Upper East Regional Chairman

Elvis Figo Awonekai has been elected the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after securing 177 votes at the party’s regional congress held on Saturday, August 15th at the Regional House of Chiefs.

Mr. Awonekai emerged victorious in a five-way contest, defeating Dr. Moses Kwabena Atinga, who obtained 123 votes. The other contestants were Filson Kweku Awankuah, who polled 18 votes; Patrick Ayaaba, who secured 13 votes; and Osman M. Konkonba, who obtained one vote.

The election forms part of efforts by the NPP to reorganise its structures and rebuild its grassroots base in the Upper East Region following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The 2nd Vice Chairman, Bampil Badeabo Moses, and the Youth Organizer, Salahu-Deen Musah, who were unopposed, were sworn into office together with the other executives.

The newly elected executives are expected to lead the party’s reorganisation in the region in the next 4 years, strengthen its grassroots structures and work towards rebuilding the NPP ahead of future elections.

The Upper East Region presents a significant challenge for the new leadership, after the NPP lost all 15 parliamentary seats in the region to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
