A member of the NDC communication team in the Upper East Region, Celestina Atanga, has declared her intention to contest the position of Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency.
She made the declaration when she appeared on Bolga FM’s political talk show, Zina Yela, on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Ms. Atanga said she joined the party’s communication team in 2019, after years of service for the party under the JM Ladies, a pro-NDC women’s group where she actively campaigned for then NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and the parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo.
According to her, she and other members of the group visited communities across the constituency and supported the campaign with their personal resources. She attributed the encouragement and support of her mentor, Abdallah Salifu Jonathan, the Upper East Regional NDC Communication Officer, which made her join the party’s communications team.
Ms. Atanga said her decision to contest the Deputy Communications Officer position was informed by the limited participation of women in political communication.
She noted that women who venture into party politics are often encouraged to contest positions such as Women’s Organiser, but argued that women could occupy any position within a political party if given the opportunity.
“I said, okay, I’m going to break from the norm. So, what I’m going to do is that I’ll go for communication. And I have seen that with that, I’ll grow in it and I’ll pull my other ladies along.”
She said her ambition goes beyond winning the position, explaining that she intends to recruit and encourage more women to join the NDC’s communication bureau.
Ms. Atanga, who is among the few female NDC communicators in the Upper East Region, recently received recognition from the Regional Communication Bureau during a capacity-building workshop for communicators.
She appealed to NDC delegates in Bolgatanga Central to support her candidature when nominations and elections are held.
The NDC is scheduled to open nominations for constituency executive positions on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 7:00 a.m., and close nominations on Thursday, September 17, at 5:00 p.m.
The constituency executive elections are scheduled for Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, at designated venues within the respective constituencies.
