The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, has raised concerns about birds destroying white millet farms this season, as he urged farmers to consider early planting to reduce crop losses.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the chief said some farmers have been left with little or no white millet, locally known as naara, to harvest because of damage caused by birds.
He said the situation has forced some households to depend more on maize and other food crops purchased from the market.
According to Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, farmers who plant late also risk their crops missing critical rainfall periods and other favourable conditions needed for growth.
He therefore encouraged farmers to begin their farming activities early enough to improve their chances of harvesting before birds, pests and unfavourable weather conditions affect their crops.
“There is always good in farming early and harvesting early,” he said.
The Paramount Chief also used the interview to caution residents against the indiscriminate cutting of trees for firewood.
He stressed the importance of trees to the environment and livelihoods of communities and called for greater efforts to protect them.
Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum said trees contribute to environmental conditions that support rainfall and provide other benefits necessary for human survival.
He called on farmers and other residents to combine responsible farming practices with environmental protection to safeguard their livelihoods.
