The lack of electricity at some Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the Bongo District is making it difficult to retain health workers in affected communities, District Health Director Estella Abazesi has said.
According to Madam Abazesi, some health workers are reluctant to stay and work in communities where basic utilities, particularly electricity, are unavailable.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme, she identified Sikabisi in the Namoo area, Akulposiga and Beo Tankoo among communities where health facilities are facing electricity challenges.
Madam Abazesi explained that while some communities have access to electricity, their health facilities are located far from existing power connections, making extensions to the facilities difficult and costly.
She said the absence of reliable electricity affects both health workers and patients, particularly when healthcare services have to be provided at night or during emergencies.
The District Health Director also identified reliable water supply as another pressing need for some health facilities and appealed for support to improve access to both water and electricity.
She called on individuals, philanthropists, businesses, NGOs and other development partners to support affected facilities with the infrastructure needed to improve healthcare delivery.
Madam Abazesi commended the Bongo District Assembly for its collaboration with the Health Directorate in addressing challenges confronting the district’s health sector.
She said the Directorate would continue working with the Assembly and the Member of Parliament for Bongo to identify and address challenges affecting healthcare facilities across the district.
The Health Director maintained that addressing the utility challenges would require support from government, communities, development partners and other stakeholders.
