The Paga Youth Movement (PAYOM) has commended President John Dramani Mahama and his government for a number of development interventions and commitments aimed at addressing longstanding challenges in Paga and surrounding communities in the Upper East Region.
The group particularly welcomed the completion and commissioning of the Paga Senior High School E-Block on Thursday, August 13, 2026, describing it as a significant intervention in improving educational infrastructure in the area.
PAYOM also expressed appreciation for the government’s commitment to granting Paga Senior High School full boarding status from the next academic year, constructing boys’ and girls’ dormitory blocks and providing the school with a 60-seater bus.
According to the group, the interventions respond to longstanding demands, including the completion of the E-Block and reconstruction of the girls’ dormitory, which was destroyed by fire in 2021.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Wenawome Duriyem Aborah, PAYOM said it was also encouraged by commitments to address the persistent water challenges in Paga and surrounding communities, complete the Agenda 111 hospital project and reconstruct the collapsed Navio Bridge.
The movement said the bridge was critical to connectivity between Navio, Paga, Manyoro, Sirigu and major communities in neighbouring Burkina Faso.
PAYOM said the interventions would improve access to essential services, strengthen transportation links and contribute to the socio-economic development of communities in the area.
However, the youth movement said more development challenges remained on the agenda, including the need for an inland port in Paga to address the increasing congestion caused by heavy-duty trucks travelling to neighbouring West African countries.
It said the large number of trucks parked along the shoulders of the principal road posed concerns for road safety, traffic management and the movement of people and goods.
PAYOM therefore proposed the expansion of the Paga transit park onto land previously allocated for the inland port project as a possible sustainable solution to the truck parking challenge.
The group said such an intervention could not only ease congestion but also create economic opportunities for residents and contribute to the orderly development of Paga as a major border town.
PAYOM further called for sustained attention to other development priorities in Paga and the wider Upper East Region, expressing hope that the government’s commitments would receive the necessary support under its Resetting Ghana Agenda.
The movement pledged its continued support and constructive engagement with government while advocating for interventions in education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment and other areas that directly affect the welfare of residents.
It maintained that development must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of communities, stressing that the progress recorded in Paga should be sustained through the completion of outstanding projects and implementation of further development initiatives.
