Team Aposs, an alliance of individuals contesting various executive positions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bolgatanga Constituency, has handed over a renovated classroom block and a newly constructed kitchen to Nyariga Doone Primary School to improve teaching and learning.
The team, led by Roger Ayine Aposs, an aspirant for the constituency chairman position, undertook the renovation in September after parents and members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) drew their attention to the deteriorating condition of the facility.
The renovation involved repairing deep cracks in the walls, replacing broken windows and doors, constructing concrete flooring and repainting the entire classroom block. The team subsequently constructed a kitchen for the school after further complaints about the poor condition of the existing facility.
Speaking on behalf of Team Aposs, Mr. Aposs said the intervention followed inspections conducted after engagements with parents during the team’s rounds in the constituency.
He said the team mobilised resources to rehabilitate the classroom block before responding to the additional concerns about the kitchen. Mr. Aposs explained that the exercise formed part of the team’s response to community needs encountered during its campaign activities ahead of the NDC constituency elections.
He said the team was confident of its prospects in the elections, citing its campaign engagements with delegates and the responses received during its interactions with them.
Theresa Alegemiah, who represented the Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Education, George Asira, expressed gratitude to the team for improving the school’s learning environment.
She said the renovation had transformed a deteriorating structure into a safer and more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Ms. Alegemiah said the intervention would benefit pupils, teachers and the wider school community, adding that the education authorities appreciated the team’s investment in the future of the children. She thanked Team Aposs for the support and encouraged continued efforts to improve educational infrastructure.
Gbenga Solomon George, Circuit Supervisor for the Bolgatanga North Circuit, where Nyariga Doone Girls’ School falls under, also commended the team for the gesture. Mr. George, who said he had worked in the Sumbrungu area for more than 15 years, recalled the poor condition of the building in which the pupils had been studying.
He said the renovation was particularly significant for the girls, as it would provide them with a more dignified and conducive environment for learning. He expressed appreciation to the team for contributing to the improvement of educational infrastructure in the municipality.
The founder of Nyariga Doone Girls’ School, Reverend John Akaribo, described the intervention as timely, saying the school had faced infrastructure challenges since its establishment in 1999.
He explained that the school was initially built through community mobilisation and support from some non-governmental organisations, but limited resources had prevented the completion of some aspects of the building.
According to him, portions of the structure had remained unplastered for years, while the deteriorating condition of the facility had exposed pupils to difficulties, including the entry of reptiles into classrooms.
Reverend Akaribo said the school had undergone several challenges over the years, with the PTA struggling to address some of the infrastructure needs.
He said the intervention by Team Aposs had brought renewed hope to the school community and improved the environment for teaching and learning.
The school founder called on other individuals, organisations and politically affiliated groups to emulate the gesture, stressing that development should be prioritised regardless of political affiliation.
He added that other classroom blocks in the school still required attention and appealed for further support to address the remaining infrastructure needs.
Reverend Akaribo said the renovation demonstrated how individuals and groups could contribute to community development, urging political actors to complement their political activities with interventions that respond to the needs of residents.
