Residents of Ganlagrum in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region have welcomed the extension of electricity to their community through an initiative facilitated by the Member of Parliament, Lawyer Charles Bawa-Duah.

The development is expected to improve living conditions, support small businesses and provide opportunities for residents who have lived for years without access to electricity.

Speaking to Bolga FM reporter Moses Anaba Azubire during a visit to the community, residents expressed appreciation to the MP, describing the connection as a significant improvement in their lives.

One resident, Albert Aniah, said the availability of electricity would particularly benefit women who previously travelled long distances to access grinding mills.

“We are so grateful to Lawyer Charles Bawa-Duah,” he said, expressing optimism that the connection would ease some of the difficulties residents faced in their daily activities.

Another resident said the connection would improve access to information and enable households to use electrical appliances.

“We are happy that the MP has extended electricity to us. We now feel like Ghanaians. I can sit in my room and watch television and know what is happening around the world,” the resident said.

Addressing residents, Mr Bawa-Duah encouraged them to take advantage of the electricity connection to expand economic activities and improve educational opportunities for children.

He stressed that access to electricity should translate into tangible improvements in livelihoods, particularly through the establishment and expansion of small businesses.

The MP also urged parents to encourage their children to use the improved lighting conditions to study and prepare for their future.

Meanwhile, Mr Bawa-Duah disclosed that the government had approved electricity extension projects for 47 communities and locations across the Bongo District.

According to information provided by the MP, the areas earmarked include Nyariga, Amikabiisi, Kadari, Tindongo, Goo, Widongo, Awaa Atiabiisi, Awale Namoo, Sikabiisi, Lungu, Ayourpia and parts of Beo.

Other locations identified include Bongo Soe Herbal Centre, Akire Kunkua CHPS compound, Boko, Malka-Multi, Kansoo Azoosidaan, Akonka, Abagribono, Ayogate Akirikenku and several communities within the Bongo Kunkua, Tarongo and Apuwongo areas.

The proposed extensions also cover locations in Yekine, Akamo, Yaka, Akundoo, Apeliga and Asakule, among others.

The MP said the interventions formed part of efforts to expand electricity access and support socioeconomic development in underserved communities.

However, he did not provide specific timelines for the commencement or completion of the individual projects.

For residents of Ganlagrum, the connection marks an important step towards improving access to essential services and creating new economic opportunities.

They expressed hope that the availability of electricity would encourage business growth, improve household activities and contribute to the community’s development.
