“You are a lawyer, speak with facts”: NPP challenges Bongo MP over Ganlagirum electrification project

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bongo has challenged the Member of Parliament for the area, Charles Bawa-Duah, to acknowledge the role of the previous administration in initiating the Ganlagirum electrification project rather than claiming credit for its implementation.

The party insists that the project, which it says is linked to electrification works at Bungu/Asasibokom, was initiated through the efforts of former Nayorigo Electoral Area Assembly Member Lawrence Ake-emah-kapoe under the previous NPP administration.

Addressing a press conference, the NPP’s Communications Officer, Agengre Daniel Asebila, said the former assembly member began the process by engaging the then Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy and the former Bongo District Chief Executive to seek electricity connections for the communities.

According to the party, Mr Ake-emah-kapoe was subsequently directed to submit a formal application to the Minister for Energy, endorsed by traditional leaders.

The NPP said the former assembly member prepared the application, secured the necessary signatures and submitted it to the ministry, setting in motion the processes that led to the electrification works in Ganlagirum and Bungu/Asasibokom.

The party further claimed that two contractors were engaged to undertake the projects, identifying Daniel Abatara as one of them.

It said Mr Ake-emah-kapoe continued to facilitate engagements between the contractors and other stakeholders even after leaving the Assembly to ensure the projects progressed.

The NPP’s criticism follows a recent visit by the Bongo MP to Ganlagirum, during which the party alleges he presented the electrification project as an achievement of the current administration without acknowledging earlier efforts.

“It is therefore regrettable that the MP, the DCE and, by extension, the current administration are taking credit for a project without acknowledging the people and administration whose efforts made it possible,” the party stated.

Mr Asebila maintained that the project predated the current MP’s tenure and should not be presented as an entirely new intervention by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

The party called on the MP to provide an accurate account of the project’s history and recognise the contributions of those who initiated the process.
