Upper East regional minister, Hon. Rockson Bukari has bemoaned the falling standards in churches as a result of the proliferation of mushroom churches.

According to him, the increase in the number of self-styled pastors who preach only the “Prosperity Gospel” rather than patience, hard work and modesty which are the good news of the bible has become a very worrying phenomenon which is affecting productivity in the country.

The Minister who was speaking at the Centenary Easter Convention of the Christ Apostolic Church in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga said: “some mushroom churches are taking literal interpretation of the bible and hoodwinking entire congregation into all week prayer and worship sessions at the expense of working productively to fend for themselves and contribute to national development”.

He noted that “the activities of such churches are even infringing on the fundamental human rights of their neighbors as they contend with excessive noise making from the sustained incantations and blurring of Public address systems.

He used the opportunity to call on the Christian Council of Ghana, Association of Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches to help arrest the religious fanatism and commercialisation and restore the good name and integrity of the church.
