Spokesperson of the second deputy speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin has said although there are several calls for him (Algan Bagbin) to declare his intentions to lead the National Democratic Congress in 2020, Hon. Bagbin is concentrated on rebuilding the party after the 2016 defeat to the NPP.

“There have been several calls on Alban Bagbin to step up to declare his interest in leading the party in the 2020 elections but that is not his focus for now. He is concentrated on helping to rebuild the NDC after the electoral defeat in the 2016 elections and after that, we will consider the way forward.”

Posters of Hon. Bagbin for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress surfaced in the Upper West region this week which sparked debate

Mr. Konuba Joseph noted that the calls on Hon. Bagbin is nationwide and from the various divides; a clear indication that the people yearn for him.

“The call on Hon. Bagbin is from all the divides and it’s a nationwide call. Even communicators of the governing party, New Patriotic Party are also calling on him to declare his intentions to lead the party in 2020. You see that the people yearn for him but for now, we are concentrating on rebuilding the party.”

He, however, called on people making the calls to respect the laid down procedures and timetable of their party adding that in the right time Hon. Bagbin will make his intentions known.

He mentioned that the NDC as of now do not need a tribal or religious representation but rather an individual who will unite the party and move it forward adding that if that is not done, the party may not be able to arrest power from the NPP.

“What we need now as a party is not tribal or religious representation. We need an individual who can unite the party and take it to the promised land of arresting power from the NPP in 2020. If that is not done, then the party’s hope of taking power in 2020 will just be a mirage.”
