The Bolgatanga polytechnic has been given a grant of GHC 458,380 by the Skills Development Fund of the Council of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) to provide skills training for 300 farmers in the handling of tomatoes for the readiness for the gamma radiation and processing.

This will reduce post-harvest loses farmers in the region are faced with due to environmental conditions.

Dr. Mba Atinga, Rector of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic said this at the third congregation of the Polytechnic held at Sumbrungu over the weekend.

According to Dr. Mba, the project will also set up three medium intermediary processing facilities for continues training in the processing of tomatoes.

He said the criticisms raised by individuals about the disproportionate number of students doing business-related programs in tertiary institutions are not as a result of the institutions but with the larger society.

“….. the problem is not from the polytechnics but from the larger society, policy makers and employers. Prospective students choose courses based on their perception, sometimes of the sectors that will give them faster and the most rewarding jobs…”-said Dr. Mba.

Dr. Mba also said the Bolgatanga Polytechnic has no suitable multi-purposed auditorium, the reason for which its third congregation was held in a workshop.

He appealed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund to as a matter of urgency approve the request made for a 2,000 seater auditorium for the Polytechnic.

Council Chairman of the Polytechnic, Ambassador Donald Adabere who was also present at the occasion said the council will continue to provide strategic direction for the polytechnic through the provision of appropriate policies and programs.

He also urged polytechnics to design appropriate and mandate programs and stay focused.
