Tricycle riders in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga have blocked roads to register their displeasure at a decision by the REGSEC to ban the use of tricycles after 7pm in the region.
REGSEC last week in a statement indicated that it has placed a ban on riding tricycles in the Upper East region after 7pm starting from May 26. Reasons for the ban included the fact that minor dominate in the number of people who ride the tricycles.
This decision was met with contempt by riders of these tricycles who insisted the ban will increase the rate of unemployment in the region because most riders make enough money during the said time for the ban.
Through the Secretary of the tricycle riders association, Salifu Baba Yahaya, they pleaded with the REGSEC to have a rethink of their decision and called for a constitutional amendment to allow tricycles to be used for commercial purposes.
However, their plea was not taken into consideration and in order to register their displeasure, the tricycle users today, May 30 have blocked all entry roads to the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga.
A1 Radio’s Seidu Suleman reports that vehicles from Tamale have been denied entry into Bolgatanga township. He adds that vehicles from Paga and Navrongo has also been blocked to deny entry into the Bolgatanga township.
A gentle who identified himself as Yakubu and the PRO of the tricycle riders association who spoke to a1radioonline.com mentioned that “we are not in a military era where the regional minister and his people will take decisions and put it on us. They did not provide us with employment and when we have found some for ourselves and they want to spoil our work. How can they say we should not work after pm?”
Meanwhile, Seidu reports that there is no security present where the tricycle riders have blocked the road.
