One student is reported to have died from gunshot, while another is battling for life after a students’ riot at the Sandema Senior High-Technical School in the Builsa North District in the Upper East Region.
The two students are believed to have been hit by stray bullets probably from the warning shots by the Police, who were called in to disperse the angry students.
On the night of Tuesday July 16, at about 9:30pm when students had closed from their usual “preps”, a misunderstanding ensued between the school’s Cadet Corps and some students who were angered by an action the Cadet Corps had taken against their colleagues.
Usually, after the preps session, the Cadet Corps have the mandate to ensure that students enter their respective dormitories within a specific time.
Reports from the school indicate that, the Cadet Corps during their night patrol came across some students after the specified time and so compelled these students to kneel down. The action did not go down well with these students, who later went into their dormitories after they were released and reported to some students.
These students mobilized to attack the Cadet Corps, which resulted in a fight between these angry students and Cadet Corps. The students later extended the attacks to their teachers because they have empowered the Cadet Corps to “maltreat” students on campus.
In the process, some motorbikes belonging to teachers were burnt down, some window louver blades were destroyed and some other properties belonging to the school and teachers were also destroyed.
The Police were called in to disperse the angry students and as expected, they fired some warning shots. It is suspected that some of the bullets might have landed on the two students.
It has not been established that some of the students also had guns and fired same in the course of the riot.
