The parliament of Ghana in October 2008 passed a new pensions law which established a 3-tier Pension Scheme to replace the previous social security contribution system.
The National Pension Act, 2008 (Act 766) established the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to monitor the operations of the scheme.
In the Upper East Region, the NPRA held an outreach Programme on the 3-tier pension scheme at the SSNIT conference center on Tuesday for workers of the informal sector where they elaborated the importance of adopting the 3-tier pension scheme.
The Chief Executive Officer the NPRA, Laud Senanu said over 80% of workers come from the informal sector and explained why the 3-tier pension scheme is good for such workers.
The Director of corporate affairs of the NPRA, Rita Afua Adzovie said the 3-tier pension scheme is voluntary and covers workers of the informal sector so that when they become old they will have something to live on.
