As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Absa Bank Ghana Limited has donated a 10,000-liter poly tank, nose masks, hand sanitizers, liquid soap, and hand tissues to the Anglican Primary School in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region.
The donation is geared towards augmenting the government’s quest to control the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Head of Citizenship at Absa Bank Ghana Limited, Priscilla Yeboah stated that the gesture was in line with activities to commemorate the first anniversary of the bank since it was changed from Barclays to Absa Bank Limited.
“One of our main goals is to support the communities that we operate. We have so many initiatives that we use to support these communities and one of the pillars is education and skills development. But this year, after we changed our brand from Barclays to Absa, the Coronavirus pandemic happened. There was the need to get everybody on board to fight this pandemic. The government is doing so much to support this course and the bank decided that we could support the educational institutions to fight this virus”, she indicated.
According to the Head of Citizenship at Absa Bank Ghana Limited, the donation to the Anglican Primary School adds up to a total number of 10 deprived schools in 10 different regions that the bank is supporting in the fight against the virus and to improve personal hygiene. The gesture across the 10 underprivileged schools is valued over Ghc 120, 000, she added.
Mrs. Yeboah revealed that the bank over the years has given scholarships to students in tertiary institutions as well as trained youth on entrepreneurial skills.
Hitherto the donation, the school children of the Anglican Primary School trek to nearby boreholes for water during school hours. Headmistress of the school, Vida Forson said the situation then was affecting teaching and learning.
“By the time these children will go for water and return, classes will be ongoing. Some of them had to get notes from their colleagues to copy because they had to go to the borehole and join long queues.”
She thanked the Bank for the support and pledged to put into good use the items.
“We have a mechanized borehole in the school but the poly tank we have is small to sustain the children take and the school kitchen. But with this tank, it is going to ease the water crisis in the school. It has come at the right time because, in this Covid era, children are supposed to wash their hands regularly. But with the items, we can manage the virus spread. So we are very grateful to the Absa Bank.”
Mrs. Elizabeth Asige on behalf of the Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Anne Estella thanked Absa Bank Ghana Limited for the support which says will go a long way to improve teaching and learning as well as a measure to stem of the Covid-19 spread.
