President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to ensure a peaceful election while calling on Traditional rulers to use their influence to stop the use of intemperate language on radio especially in a lead up to the elections.
The president as part of his ‘accounting to the people tour’ in the upper east region has been engaging religious and traditional leaders in the region to account for his stewardship as president while inspecting and cutting sod for the construction of some projects in the region including the 111kilometres Bolga-Bawku-Polimakom road and the Tamne irrigation dam in the Garu District.
Addressing the upper east regional house of chiefs on Tuesday in Bolgatanga, President Mahama prevailed upon the chiefs to intervene in situations of tensed political atmosphere and take part in efforts by the National Media Commission to curb the use of inciting and intemperate language on radio and television.
“When things get heated it is your duty to intervene and to make sure you call the politicians to order. I believe you also should use your influence as traditional rulers to stop the use of intemperate language especially on our airwaves,” he said.
He further bemoaned the rabble-rousing political discussions on media platforms adding that “our airwaves have been democratized in order that we could establish community radio stations and use them as means to educate, inform and entertain our people in order that we would bring progress to society but when you open the airwaves it’s like everybody says what they like and some people use intemperate language which is totally unacceptable”.
President Mahama also assured of his commitment to ensure that the 2016 elections are peaceful and successful.
