President John Dramani Mahama has hinted that operators of a defunct microfinance company Diamond Winners Microfinance would be fished out by security agencies to pave way for processes to retrieve colossal sum of money the company has swindled.
The president said this on Tuesday when members of the Upper East Regional house of chiefs appealed to him to help redeem the cash of thousands of costumers of the said company and other defunct microfinance companies in the region and other parts of the country.
The chiefs in an address read by president of the regional house of chiefs, Naba Sigri Bewong appealed to the president to intervene in the worrying situation that has left many people in a state of frustration. Naba Sigiri Bewong disclosed that over 2,000 costumers of the company who invested a total sum of Ghc 27,000 million won a court case for a refund on the back of the collapse of the microfinance company but the retrieval effort has since proven futile.
A warrant according to the chief was issued for the arrest of owners of the company but added that “up till now zero we don’t know where they are”.
Naba Sigri Bewong noted that the collapse of Diamond Winners Microfinance and DKM Diamond Microfinance has inordinately affected the lives of the people and almost grounded economic activities in the region.
President Mahama in his response assured the public of the security agencies readiness to clampdown on owners of unlicensed microfinance companies in the country.
“We have warned over and over again that a lot of these companies do not exist and many of them are not licensed at all. I will ask the security services to intensify their efforts to find out wherever they are and bring them [Diamond Winners Microfinance Company] to justice. I have never heard about this company Diamond Winners, I don’t think we win diamond in upper east region so why will anybody set up a diamond winners microfinance company and we cannot understand but we will work with you on that”.
President Mahama on the occasion encouraged youth of the region to take advantage of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) modules to be employed. While reiterating his commitment to ensure a peaceful election in the country, he urged chiefs to call to order politicians who use the airwaves to churn out intemperate language. The National Media Commission (NMC) according President Mahama will be empowered to ensure decency on the airwaves.
