The Program Manager of A1 Radio in Bolgatanga, Emmanuel Aboayge, has described the COVID-19 levy and the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) as the “most useless taxes ever” imposed on Ghanaians.

Speaking on A1 Radio, he called for these taxes to be scrapped, arguing that they have done little to address the country’s economic challenges.

Mr. Aboayge, however, highlighted the potential of the betting tax, asserting that it could provide significant revenue for the government.

He stated that the betting tax would be a more effective tool to address the nation’s economic woes, urging the current administration to take it seriously.

“The economic state of the country needs tangible tax reforms to cushion it. The betting tax is one of the brilliant reforms that can yield huge benefits for the government,” he explained.

He estimated that close to 100,000 Ghanaians engage in betting daily, emphasizing that even a small percentage of tax from this activity could generate substantial revenue.

“This money can be used to implement youth-focused projects and create tangible benefits for the nation,” he added.

Touching on the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) promise to abolish the betting tax when elected, Mr. Aboayge advised the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, to reconsider.

“The NDC should weigh the benefits this tax can bring. President-elect Mahama should apologize to Ghanaians and allow the betting tax to function,” he suggested.

Mr. Aboayge’s comments come as the NDC prepares to assume office in January 2025, amid high public expectations for economic relief and growth.

He underscored the need for innovative approaches to revenue generation, especially those targeting untapped sectors like betting.

In a related development, Mr. Aboayge announced the upcoming launch of Bolga FM, a new radio station under his management.

Scheduled for January 6, 2025, Bolga FM will focus on delivering indigenous content to its audience in the Upper East Region and beyond.

“Our goal is to connect with our listeners through culturally relevant and community-centered programming,” he said.

As discussions on tax reforms and economic strategies continue, stakeholders await the NDC’s official policy direction on the controversial betting tax.
