Talensi DCE calls for collective action to improve sanitation

The District Chief Executive for Talensi, John Millim Naabwomya, has called for collective and sustained efforts from residents to tackle sanitation challenges in the district.

He made the call on Saturday, November 1, 2025, during a clean-up exercise at Pwalugu, organized as part of activities marking the National Sanitation Day.

The exercise, which brought together community members, Assembly staff, and volunteers, formed part of a national campaign to promote hygiene and environmental cleanliness across Ghana.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Naabwomya emphasized the importance of personal and communal responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness. You shouldn’t be living in an environment where you expect somebody to come and do the work for you. We are all supposed to clean our immediate surroundings and keep the place clean,” he said.

The DCE stressed that good sanitation practices not only prevent diseases but also reduce the financial burden on families and the health system.

“If we really want to live a healthy life, then we must keep our environment clean. When the environment is clean, almost everybody will be healthy. That will reduce our spending on ill health,” he noted.

Mr. Naabwomya described Talensi as largely a rural district, where most households on the outskirts have private toilet facilities. However, he disclosed that the Assembly was working to provide public toilet facilities in communities where access to sanitation infrastructure remains limited.

He further assured residents that the District Assembly would continue to intensify public education on hygiene and environmental cleanliness, adding that sanitation should not be a one-day activity but a daily responsibility for all.

“Even beyond the National Sanitation Day, our environmental desk is always out there educating the public on how to keep their surroundings clean. Sustaining this effort is key to promoting public health and community development,” he said.

The National Sanitation Day initiative, launched by former President John Dramani Mahama in September 2014, encourages citizens to dedicate the first Saturday of every month to cleaning their surroundings to foster a cleaner and healthier Ghana.
