The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Aleemyarum, has appealed to the government, NGOs, and private individuals to help establish a tertiary institution in the district to serve students from six senior high schools operating in the area.
Speaking to Bolga FM at his palace on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the chief said Bongo remains a deprived district and requires strong educational investment to accelerate development.
“Education is our priority because as a deprived district, it is through education that we can get development,” he said.
Naba Baba Salifu stated the district urgently needs either a nursing or teacher training college. However, he said a teacher training college would be more beneficial as it would feed the six senior high schools in the area.
The chief also raised concerns about environmental pollution, particularly plastic waste, and called on plastic recycling companies to support districts with recycling plants to improve sanitation and reduce environmental degradation.
“The plastic recycling company should provide recycling plants to all districts to be able to recycle plastic materials,” he said.
He further described open defecation as a major challenge in the district. According to him, the traditional council has established a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) fund to support the construction of public toilets and assist low-income households to build their own facilities.
“There will be a law enforced to ensure that everybody within the area puts an end to open defecation,” he said.
The chief stressed that promoting sanitation and improving access to tertiary education are central to achieving sustainable development in the Bongo district.
Another tertiary institution would add up to the already existing private tertiary instutition in the area.
