The Bawku water system is 85% complete and set to be commissioned in 2026, the government announced Thursday as it outlined major investments in water and sanitation under the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

Presenting the budget to Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said expanding access to safe water remains essential to public health and economic productivity, especially in underserved communities like Bawku, Damongo and Yendi — all of which are benefitting from critical ongoing water infrastructure projects.

As of September 2025, rural water coverage had reached 78%, while urban water supply stood at 93%. The Community Water and Sanitation Agency drilled 410 new boreholes and completed 37 small-town water systems nationwide to improve access.

The Ghana Water Company Limited produced 351 million gallons of water per day in 2025, supported by rehabilitation works on the Kpong and Weija treatment plants. Dr. Forson noted that the Damango, Bawku and Yendi water systems — each at 85% completion — will be fully operational next year.

Government also pledged to deepen investments in sanitation. Under the National Sanitation Campaign, 24,000 household toilets were constructed in 2025, helping cut open defecation rates in beneficiary districts by 12%. Another 30,000 household toilets and 500 mechanized public facilities are planned for 2026.

Work also continued on major drain infrastructure in Accra under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, with the Akweteyman and Alajo drains reaching 62% completion.

Dr. Forson said the 2026 water and sanitation programme is designed to strengthen resilience, reduce disease burden and improve living standards while supporting the broader national agenda for growth and economic transformation.
