The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), in partnership with Members of Parliament and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has secured 94 infrastructure projects to address educational deficits across the region. The initiative targets 17 senior high schools (SHSs), two kindergartens, 10 junior high schools, and 13 primary schools, the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga said Wednesday.
He spoke at his first press soiree in Bolgatanga, Upper East Regional capital.
Key beneficiaries include Gambibgo SHS, which will receive seven projects including a dining hall, dormitories, a science laboratory, and staff bungalows. Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS will benefit from 11 projects, covering an administrative block, dormitories, classroom blocks, toilet facilities, and bungalows.
Other schools slated for upgrades include Pusiga SHS, Kanjarga SHS, Azeem-Namoa SHS, Zamse SHS, and Navrongo SHS. The Bolgatanga Central Technical Institute is also set to receive a six-unit technical workshop.
The projects aim to ease challenges associated with the double-track system, improve learning facilities, and support the gradual phase-out of the system. Basic schools such as Mognori JHS, Bachonsa JHS, Nyorkokor JHS, Tambalug Primary School, and Zamsa Kindergarten are also included in the programme.
Beyond physical infrastructure, Mr. Atanga said the government has implemented reforms to strengthen education quality. These include restoring the three-term academic calendar, reinforcing Parent-Teacher Associations, and reviewing the national curriculum under the “reset agenda.” Over 666,000 sanitary pads have been distributed to girls in basic and second-cycle schools to boost attendance and promote gender equity. Additionally, the B-STEM programme has been rolled out to 194 schools across the region, while a standards-based curriculum is now fully implemented in all 35 public SHSs.
According to the Upper East Regional Minister, these interventions reflect the government’s commitment to delivering holistic education, improving learning environments, and equipping students with skills relevant to national development priorities.
