An aspirant for the Upper East Regional Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Filson Awankua, has appealed to delegates to vote massively for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
According to Mr. Awankua, Dr. Bawumia’s track record within the party and in government clearly sets him apart as a unifier, visionary leader, and achiever who has the true interest of the NPP at heart. He stressed that the Vice President would not jeopardize the party’s vision and mission but rather consolidate and advance them for electoral success.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Awankua, who is also the founder of the political advocacy group RRU4DMB, noted that the NPP needs a candidate capable of leading the party to victory in the 2028 general elections. He described Dr. Bawumia as the candidate with the credibility, experience, and national appeal to secure that victory.
“I am pleading and appealing to the cherished delegates of the NPP — I think about 8,000 of them in the Upper East. On Saturday, January 31, they should vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia based on his track record as a peacemaker, a unifier, a visionary, and an achiever,” he stated.
Mr. Awankua further called for unity and peace before, during, and after the primaries, urging party members to see themselves as one family. He cautioned against internal divisions, stressing that such tendencies could weaken the party ahead of future national elections.
“We are all one family, one brotherhood, the same family tree. We shouldn’t divide ourselves. Whoever wins, we must come together for the sake of the party,” he added.
While making his personal preference clear for Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Awankua assured the party of his loyalty regardless of the outcome. He indicated that he would work tirelessly for the NPP even if other contenders such as Kennedy Agyapong or Bryan Acheampong emerge victorious, emphasizing that he prefers any NPP-led government to a return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
